Southern Plains...

Pre-Planning (fall-seeded)
Identify acres for fall-seeded crop
   production
Evaluate residue cover
Evaluate weeds, especially
   perennials
Manage old-growth residue by
   mowing, flailing or burning,
March to May (as permitted).

Summer Burndown - 1997
Warm-Season Grasses

Allow 6-8 inches regrowth
Apply Roundup Ultra at 64 oz/A
   after July 1 or
V-blade or disk to manage residue
   and prepare seedbed (plowing is
also an option but it can cost the
loss of years of profitable organic
   matter buildup)

Fallow Option
If insufficient moisture, summer
   fallow acres
Consider minimum-till sorghum in
   spring of '98 (see below).

Fall Burndown - 1997
Apply Roundup Ultra at 32 oz/A
   in August-September for escape
grass and weeds or redisk if disk
   is used to prepare seedbed.
Seed winter wheat after October 1
using a no-till or high residue drill
   with fertilizer attachment.

Spring/Summer - 1998
Develop a crop rotation and
   residue management plan.

Minimum-till Sorghum (spring-seeded)
In 1997...

Mow or control burn old CRP
residue from April to May '97.
Allow 6-8 inches of new growth
Apply Roundup Ultra at 64 oz/A
after July 1 to early September
   (when plants are actively growing)

Set V-blade deep enough (about 4-inches) to cut off roots. This minimizes residue disturbance and leaves a relatively smoother surface for planting.

No-till drilling fall-seeded wheat, following burn and V-blade.

Minimum-till Sorghum (spring-seeded) In 1998...
V-blade to undercut (sandy and loamy soils) the sod or disk (clay soils) to
   loosen the soil
